The Canadian Dental Care Plan

Luxe Dental Hygiene

Updated: Nov 22, 2024

Canada has introduced a new initiative called the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) to provide dental care access for low-income Canadians. Service Canada will assess individual eligibility, while parents or guardians will determine eligibility for children under 18. The plan specifically targets Canadians with an adjusted family income below $90,000 who lack dental insurance.

Starting in December 2023, eligible seniors aged 87 and above will receive application packages by mail. Those aged 77 to 86 will follow in January 2024, seniors aged 72 to 76 in February, and those aged 70 to 71 in March 2024. Each mailed package will include a personalized code and instructions on how to apply. By March 2024, seniors aged 70 and above will benefit from government funding for regular dental cleanings and other services. Refer to Canada.ca for the application schedule based on age groups.

Dental Cleanings for Seniors

Regular dental cleanings are essential for individuals of all age groups, particularly seniors, as they may become more vulnerable to specific oral health issues with advancing age. Sustaining good oral hygiene becomes increasingly crucial, and the following points underscore its importance:

  1. Prevention of Oral Health Issues: Routine dental cleanings are effective in preventing various oral health issues, including gum disease, cavities, and other dental concerns that can escalate with age.

  2. Plaque and Tartar Removal: Over time, plaque and tartar can accumulate on teeth surfaces, leading to decay and gum inflammation. Professional dental cleanings ensure thorough removal, reducing the risk of these issues.

  3. Early Detection of Problems: Regular cleanings provide an opportunity for dentists to detect potential problems early on. Early intervention can prevent the progression of dental issues and maintain overall oral health.

  4. Preservation of Natural Teeth: Timely cleanings contribute to the preservation of natural teeth. By addressing issues promptly, individuals can avoid tooth loss and maintain proper oral function.

  5. Fresh Breath: Dental cleanings help eliminate bacteria and plaque that contribute to bad breath. Seniors can enjoy improved oral freshness, contributing to overall well-being and confidence.

  6. Improved Systemic Health: Maintaining oral health through regular cleanings is linked to improved systemic health. Studies suggest connections between oral health and conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

  7. Customized Care for Seniors: Our team of dental hygienists can provide tailored care for seniors, addressing specific concerns related to aging, such as dry mouth, tooth sensitivity, and potential medication-related oral health issues.

  8. Enhanced Quality of Life: Good oral health positively impacts overall quality of life. Seniors who prioritize regular dental cleanings are more likely to experience improved comfort, function, and aesthetics.

In summary, regular dental cleanings are a fundamental component of maintaining optimal oral health for individuals of all ages, especially seniors. These proactive measures contribute to preventing issues, ensuring early detection, and promoting overall well-being.
