Oral Assessment

Your initial visit will begin with a comprehensive dental hygiene assessment. The dental hygienist will go through your medical and dental history, check your head and neck for any abnormalities, screen for oral cancer, and do a thorough examination of the hard and soft tissues of your mouth, including an assessment of your oral hygiene regimen at home.

All of the information collected will be used by the dental hygienist to formulate a dental hygiene diagnosis which will help our team discuss your goals with you and prepare a treatment plan that is specific to your needs.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gum and bone supporting the teeth. It is caused by the accumulation of plaque and bacteria on the teeth resulting in swelling within the supporting tissue. If the plaque is not removed by daily brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar, which is very difficult to remove on your own without professional help. Periodontal disease can be managed through the maintenance of overall health and treatment of the teeth and gums through dental hygiene.

Dental Cleaning

The removal of tartar deposits (also known as calculus) from the teeth, both above and below the gumline is called scaling and root planing. The removal of plaque and calculus (ultimately bacteria), is the best way to maintain healthy teeth and gums and to prevent or reverse gingivitis and periodontitis. We can also treat more advanced gum disease by providing gum therapy directed at reducing inflammation and gum pockets. This can range anywhere from 2-4 appointments of deep cleaning and optional deep pocket irrigation with a medicated solution. Follow up appointments will occur at regular intervals.
How long does it take?
Usually our appointments last one hour. However, if a patient has not visited a dental hygienist for a long time, it can take up to 2-4 appointments and sometimes even more dependent on the level of plaque and tartar. Time is very specific to the condition of the patient's teeth and gums.
Prevention & Maintenance

Prevention is the best cure. Periodontal disease can be prevented, and even reversed, when caught in the early stages. By having regular and professional dental cleanings, you could catch and treat gum disease before it becomes a problem.

Preventative Services

What is it?

At Luxe, we believe that regular dental hygiene maintenance is a big factor in achieving long lasting oral health. Often, we find patients are very busy with work or their social lives that they forget to take care of their teeth and gums. This can cause many problems including: tooth decay, bad breath, gum disease and root canals. Hygienists recommend booking time for preventative dental care such as routine dental cleanings at least every 6 months. Visiting us for professional teeth cleanings regularly will help keep your teeth and gums healthy and will allow our team to detect any problems early on.

What's included?

Our preventative dental hygiene maintenance program includes regular teeth cleanings and examinations typically performed every 6 months.

Scaling & Root Planing

Removing plaque and tartar between the teeth and gums, which accumulates over time. Scaling and root planing helps to remove the bacteria that causes inflammation of the gums, which can lead to gum disease.

Polishing

Removes surface stains on the teeth making your teeth feel smooth and shiny!

Fluoride

Strengthens your enamel to help fight tooth decay and protect your teeth against cavities. Fluoride also helps prevent tooth sensitivity by depositing important minerals into the enamel.

Digital Radiographs (x-rays)

X-rays help our team to provide a better understanding of your oral health and to detect cavities, bone loss or other diseases that are not visible on the surface.

Diagnosis of gum disease

Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two most common types of gum disease. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. This is when there is a bacterial infection where the gums attach to the teeth. Debridement (scaling and root planing) are effective ways to treat gum disease in its earlier stages. Untreated gingivitis can develop into periodontitis. This is when bacteria starts to destruct the tissue and/or bone supporting the teeth.

Sealants

Sealants are a great way to prevent tooth decay from developing on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. A resin coating seals up the deep pit and fissures of the teeth, preventing bacteria from entering and starting the decay process. Sealants are particularly important as a preventative tool for decay in children with newly erupted molars.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Early detection can save lives. At our clinic, you will be screened for oral cancer once a year using state-of-the-art technology - VELscope. Oral cancer kills roughly 1 person, per hour every day in the US. Have you been screened this year?

Often generally referred to as “oral cancer”, oral and oropharyngeal cancers are any cancer that forms in the mouth, lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, hard palate, tonsils and throat.

VELscope technology examines the oral mucosa and screen for tissue abnormalities by enhancing the visualization of pre-cancers, cancer, and other disease processes.

The VELscope emits specific wavelengths of safe blue spectrum light into your mouth to stimulate natural tissue fluorescence which can then be viewed directly through the VELscope. Research has shown that the VELscope can help find abnormal tissue that might have gone unnoticed by the naked eye.

Learn more about the symptoms and risk factors of oral and oropharyngeal cancer and ask our dental team about getting an oral screening today.

Referrals

If any abnormalities are detected during your oral cancer screening, our clinic will make the appropriate referrals with your consent.

Sports Mouthguards

We make custom sports mouthguard for all ages. Mouthguards worn during sporting activities are extremely effective at preventing injury and trauma to the soft tissues of the mouth, the teeth and the jaw.

HAPPY CLIENTS

I recently took my five year old daughter to Luxe Dental Hygiene and the Owner/Hygienist was amazing. Nafisha is warm, friendly, knowledgeable and very professional with putting my little one at ease. This location is so central, easy to park at and comes with a great view of Vancouver. I'll definitely be back for my own cleaning and Zoom whitening session this month!

- Christina Weizmann

Luxe Dental Hygiene is incredible! A beautiful space with a spa ambiance! The view is beautiful too - looking out to English Bay and the mountains! Nafisha is the best dental hygienist I know :) she's so bubbly and friendly and gentle. I've had really rough dental cleanings in the past and Nafisha made me feel at ease with her talented skills. I also had my teeth whitened and I'm so happy with the results! I've had so many compliments. I highly recommend Luxe. Thanks!
