Dental cleaning, also known as prophylaxis or a professional teeth cleaning, is a preventive dental procedure performed by a dental hygienist. It involves the removal of plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains from the teeth to maintain oral health and prevent dental problems.

Here is a step-by-step explanation of what typically happens during a dental cleaning:

  1. Oral Examination: Before starting the cleaning, the dental hygienist will examine your teeth and gums to check for any signs of dental issues or abnormalities. They may use a small mirror and a dental explorer to assess your oral health.

  2. Plaque and Tartar Removal: Plaque is a sticky film that forms on the teeth and contains bacteria. The dental hygienist will use a scaler, a small metal instrument, to carefully scrape away the plaque and tartar buildup from the surfaces of your teeth, along the gumline, and between the teeth. This process is generally painless.

  3. Tooth Polishing: After removing the plaque and tartar, the dental hygienist will use a rotating rubber cup or a small brush with a gritty toothpaste-like substance called prophylaxis paste to polish your teeth and remove stubborn stains. This helps remove any residual stains and leaves your teeth feeling smooth and clean. Are you a daily coffee, tea or wine drinker? Then polishing and teeth whitening are for you!

  4. Flossing: Once the teeth are polished, the dental hygienist will floss your teeth to remove any remaining debris or plaque between the teeth and along the gumline. Flossing helps ensure that all areas are thoroughly cleaned.

  5. Rinsing: You will be asked to rinse your mouth to get rid of any remaining debris, toothpaste, or cleaning agents.

  6. Fluoride Treatment: At the end of your dental cleaning appointment, the dental hygienist will include a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen the tooth enamel and protect against tooth decay. The dental hygienist will apply a fluoride varnish to your teeth using a brush.

During the dental cleaning, the hygienist may provide oral hygiene instructions and offer tips on maintaining proper oral care at home. They may also discuss any dental issues or concerns they identify during the examination and suggest appropriate treatment if needed. Regular dental cleanings are typically recommended every six months to maintain good oral health. However, the frequency may vary depending on individual needs and the recommendations of your dental hygienist. It's important to note that a dental cleaning focuses on preventive care and the removal of plaque and tartar. If you have more advanced dental problems, such as gum disease or tooth decay, additional treatments may be necessary.
